Lisa van Roode
Lisa van Roode founder , heads the design team of Yoshiko Homewares.
After working in fashion industry for many years, with branded label collections, working with some of the best known retailers in the market place. Her job meant she was continently traveling the world bridging the gap between brand and suppliers. This lead her to build great friendships and relationships in the far east but unfortunately opened her eyes to witnessing another side of manufacturing where she saw abuse and un moral working conditions in some factories .The feeling of injustice and sadness kept gnawing at her as she drove through the streets of Dhaka past slums and rubbish dumps where street children lived all looking and hoping for a better life. It was at this point Lisa decided to think of a ways to help the local community. She had already started thinking about designing her own brand and had now decided when her dream become reality she would manufacture in Bangladesh, where she would have a say and could monitor the factories and working conditions, over seeing the standards of the factories and helping give back to the local community.
The name “Yoshiko” was decided as it stands for quality of life, from less stress to more inner peace. Beautiful products makes happy people!
The collection reflects her vision and passion for life and helping the environment. Accessories for the home, made from natural materials such as seagrass, Lisa focused on sourcing recycled and natural materials where possible which can all be seen in her latest collections right down to the packaging.
In 2006 Lisa decided it was time to move her Dutch roots and plant them in China where she felt she could make a difference she opened a sourcing office where she introduced brands to reliable factories. Over the years companies have now started looking wider a field for sourcing and more companies decided to move production to Bangladesh. So as ever, hands on Lisa moved along with the developments and went to live and work in Dhaka.
The Asian lifestyle and happy work environments termed with good weather and great beaches, its not surprising Lisa chose Thailand as a new destination.
Lisa and her husband designed their own house on the Thai island of Phuket. Apart from being blessed, Lisa remains hands on flying to Dhaka, Hong Kong & Bangkok .Lisa still keeps her contacts and customers through out Europe, buts its here in Phuket while managing the development of her home she decided it was time to create her homeware label. Yoshiko! The dream is very much alive and is now reality to share.
Using her background, knowledge and skills Lisa has a huge network factories and partners offering quality cotton items and a new net work of factories offering porcelain and other home lifestyle collection. Lisa and her design team can now pull them all together for the launch of Yoshiko. A brand that cares !
If you share Lisas passion for quality home products we would love to hear from you to share our dream.
